Manda Calls on UDMR to Support PSD for Majority
Claudiu Manda, PSD General Secretary, advocates for UDMR support to form a parliamentary majority. The current coalition holds 150-160 votes, while PSD could gather over 200 with allies. Manda criticizes Bolojan's actions as dictatorial. UDMR's support is important for reaching 233 votes. Manda dismisses AUR's early election proposal and notes USR's low poll numbers.

Claudiu Manda, the General Secretary of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and Member of the European Parliament, appealed to the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) on Tuesday to support a PSD-led government. He highlighted that the current coalition of the National Liberal Party (PNL), Save Romania Union (USR), and UDMR holds between 150 and 160 votes.
Manda emphasized that PSD could potentially secure over 200 votes by aligning with minority groups and other political factions. He proposed the formation of either a minority government led by PSD or a renewed coalition centered around the party. To achieve a parliamentary majority, PSD requires an additional 30 or more votes, bringing the total to over 233.
He noted the presence of "liberal fractions" willing to back a government led by Veștea. Manda remarked, "Bolojan i-a dat afară sau vrea să-i dea afară, ca un dictator," referring to the actions of Ilie Bolojan, a PNL figure, in dismissing or planning to dismiss certain liberal members.
The support of UDMR is seen as key for PSD to secure a majority in parliament. Manda pointed out the historical collaboration between PSD and UDMR, noting their shared vision on several issues. He expressed hope for forming a pro-European coalition centered around PSD.
Manda dismissed the call by the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) for early elections, citing it as unnecessary. He also mentioned the low polling numbers of USR, which currently stand at 7%, indicating a lack of significant influence.
The political field remains dynamic, with Manda's outreach to UDMR representing a strategic move to consolidate power and potentially shift the balance in the Romanian parliament.
