Săndoi's Securitate Ties Revealed in Archival Files
Emil Săndoi was recruited by the Securitate in October 1985 at age 20. He signed an 'Angajament' and operated under the code name 'Eugen'. His file contains 31 pages covering 1985 to 1989. Săndoi provided information on fellow players, including Gică Popescu. Popescu was investigated but not found to be a collaborator.

Emil Săndoi, a former Romanian football player, has been identified as a collaborator with the Securitate, the communist-era secret police, according to documents from the CNSAS archive. Săndoi, who operated under the code name 'Eugen', was recruited on October 24, 1985, when he was just 20 years old. On the day of his recruitment, Săndoi signed an 'Angajament', a formal commitment to secrecy, stating, 'Nu voi divulga la nimeni secretul acestei colaborări.' His file, numbered R225432, comprises 31 pages and spans from August 1985 to August 1989.
The recruitment was conducted by Lt. Maj. Guță Constantin, and Săndoi quickly became an active informant. On the same day as his recruitment, he delivered a 'Nota de Relații', listing 12 fellow football players. Between March 1986 and August 1989, Săndoi provided six informative notes, which the Securitate deemed to be of 'operative value'. One significant report, dated October 3, 1986, involved fellow footballer Gică Popescu.
Gică Popescu, who was assigned the code name 'Petrescu', had a separate file, R225431, which contained 32 pages. Despite the investigation, Popescu has consistently denied any collaboration. In June 2009, he vehemently refuted claims of involvement with the Securitate. The CNSAS subsequently ruled in July 2009 that Popescu was not a collaborator, noting the absence of an 'Angajament' document in his file.
The revelations about Săndoi's past as 'Eugen' provide a glimpse into the secretive operations of the Securitate and its influence within Romanian sports during the communist era. While Săndoi's involvement is documented, Popescu's case highlights the complexities and challenges in definitively proving or disproving collaboration during that time. The involvement of Lt. Maj. Guță Constantin in recruiting both Săndoi and Popescu adds another layer to the complex web of connections between Romanian athletes and the Securitate.
